Macaulay Eteli | WIZ | Rohan Laylor | Getachew Fantu

Macaulay Eteli
Captivating yet never overpowering, this is the aura that Macaulay Eteli's body of works conveys. His relax style beckons viewers to... Come closer and listen to a story. As you look and listen his creation comes alive.

His subtle style allows him to flow effortlessly from traditional images to scenery to abstracts. This ability adds depth and maturity to Eteli's exhibitions.

Born in Otakeme, Rivers State, Nigeria, Eteli's works strongly reflect the images and sounds of his childhood. It is from this reservoir that he now creates works that will evoke memories or make the viewer long for a place where time seems non-existent. Eteli has truly captured that place in his work with subtle confidence.

WIZ
WIZ had his first taste of the art world at the age of six, when he made his first sale to his fathers friend. He has been at it since.

WIZ, whose works are collected worldwide, acquired a lot of experience while exhibiting in France, Switzerland, USA, Czech Republic, Japan, South Africa, and Canada.

His Paintings draw inspiration to a large extent from his African experience, blending to epitomize the African essence with a reflection of the modern environment. His Works are characterized by the dynamism in the use of dots, bold strokes and vibrant colours. This imbues his works with a lot of energy and movement, which he explains as the result of a continuous search for fulfillment and identity.

The total experience of WIZ is derived from the endless utilization of imagery that is sacred, functional and deeply rooted in his cultural base.

Rohan Laylor
As one of Toronto's new and upcoming photographers, Rohan Laylor is as comfortable with a brush and paint as he is with a camera and his hands. He graduated from the Advertising and Graphic Design Program at Humber College in 1991, where he discovered a strong desire for photographic arts. He then continued to study photography at Ryerson and the Ontario College of Art.

His techniques utilize several printing processes that range from Polaroid Transgers, Emulsion Transfers, Mixed Media, Digital Manipulation and fine art black and white photography. His avante garde approach to imagery coupled with his keen sense for advertising and design allow him to create visuals that stimulate the mind, body, and soul. It is these visuals that are utilized by his clients from the fashion, film, and advertising industries.

Since completeing his studies, Rohan moved to Toronto and established Phat Dog Visuals, a studio dedicated to creativity in conjunction with photography and design communication. The studio has just recently celebrated its fourth anniversary, and to mark the event, Rohan is exhibiting some new images at the Propeller Center for the Visual Arts as part of Contact 2000.

As a photographic artist Rohan has acquired many photographic credits over the past four years. His pieces have repeatedly been published in French Photo Magazine, and most recently in Salon magazine, Wedding Bells and the cover of the millennium issue of Black Hair U.K. The latter of which will appear as part of his twelve image collection of photos, to be published as a 2001 calendar in conjunction with a fund raising campaign for the DVXT Theatre Company of Toronto.

Rohan has also created images for the Canadian Race Relations Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society. He boasts an extensive client list including companies such as Octagon Industries, Sci Can, Johnson Controls, Cougar Canada, and several well known recording artists, entertainers, and modeling agencies.

"Rohan Laylor's photographs at the Nubian Art Gallery use a lot of body language. The pictures do lovely things with light, with rhythms of line and volume, but, more strikingly, their vocabulary is one of finely sculpted and erotically charged nude form."

Getachew Fantu
Getachew Fantu's work is a culmination of colour, rawness and power. His varied cultural experiences have undoubtedly added a riveting quality to his work. Fantu continues to be influenced by the vivid images and brilliant colours that created a kaleidoscope in his native Ethiopian market places; and forever in his mind's eyes is the parade of proud faces he saw as a youth. His European and North American experiences have equally influenced his work, adding a universal appeal.

Getachew Fantu is an inspired artist who strives to utilize the five human senses to enhance the impact of his work. This allows him to create images that the eyes can see, not only what the mind believes it ought to see. He is an artist who has stretched limits and found new artistic horizons.
